Going Green Workshop Series

Monday, March 01, 2010 - Suzanne Baschieri
As part of the 2010 per capita grant, libraries will be asked to submit a plan that will make the library more environmentally friendly as envisioned by the Green Governments Illinois Act. ALS will be hosting a series of online green workshops designed to help you answer this question. This first workshop on March 22nd at 10am, will provide you with an overview of ways to become more environmentally friendly. Topics discussed will include: heating and cooling, green cleaning, recycling, water conservation, air quality, computers, and programming. All of the workshops in this series are designed to give you tips and ideas to make your library a little greener without spending a lot of money. Some actions might even save you money. The purpose of this series is to show you that small changes can make a big impact and going green can be fun! For more information or to register, please see L2

C&CE Live Chat Libraries, especially public libraries, are finding that they still need to teach the basics classes on computer literacy to their patrons. Where do you find the resources to teach these classes? Through Technology Training Wheels, of course! The Teaching Technology in Libraries module provides materials and resources for library staff members with training responsibilities and online tutorials and websites for patrons working to improve on their skills. Staff members can view actual scripts, handouts, and other resources to assist with the design of computer classes in their own libraries. To visit Teaching Technology in Libraries click here!

Florence Nightingale Bookmark

Monday, February 08, 2010 - Beth Duttlinger
Florence Nightingale is still regarded as the founder of modern nursing, but she made many contributions to society. As a hospital reformer, she focused on health promotion and disease prevention. As a “passionate statistician”, she grounded her work on the quantitative data she collected, and as a social reformer, she targeted social welfare as a means to improve public health care systems. On the 100th anniversary of her death, Michelle Quinones-Director of Library Services at Graham Hospital School of Nursing, created this bookmark to celebrate Nightingale’s visionary and scientific approach to medical care. The bookmark is customizable; there is a space at the bottom front of the bookmark where libraries can add their contact information and hours. It is available in the Library Toolkit.
